University of Lethbridge President and Vice-Chancellor Mike Mahon released a statement on Friday on the passing of former Board of Governors Chair Phil North.

“It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of our former Board of Governors chair and long-time University of Lethbridge and community supporter Phil North (LLD ’04). The University of Lethbridge extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” said Mahon in a release

North, the founder of North and Company LLP, was the university’s third Board of Governors chair, serving in that role from 1978 to 1984. He was a driving force behind the establishment of Pronghorns hockey at the U of L and continued to support the university as a donor, advocate and friend of the community. His work throughout southern Alberta was always family focused and his contributions to building the community were significant in many respects. One example of his legacy is North and Company’s sponsorship of the annual Play Day family initiative.

The U of L recognized North with an honorary degree in 2004.

“I will miss seeing and speaking with Phil at the many U of L events he continued to support. His is a great loss to our university family,” said Mahon.
