United Way accepting ECSF applications

United Way of Lethbridge & South Western Alberta is accepting funding applications for the Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF). The fund provides financial support to charities and other qualified donees adapting their frontline services to support vulnerable Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ECSF was announced by the Government of Canada and is administered in collaboration with United Way Centraide Canada, Community Foundations of Canada and the Canadian Red Cross.

United Way of Lethbridge & South Western Alberta will be distributing an investment of approximately $440,000 into local community programs in southwestern Alberta.

“Canadian charities and not for profits are always there to help you, in your time of need,” said the Hon. Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, in a news release. “But the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing real challenges to these important organizations. With today’s announcement, the Government of Canada will be there for them so they can continue to be there for Canadians.”

United Way’s interim executive director Vincent Varga expressed appreciation for the commitment from the federal government.

“We applaud this significant investment into charities and non-profits across the country,” he said. “There are many organizations in our area increasing services, adding new services and adapting every day to continue to support people and families during these difficult times. We’re looking forward to working alongside our local Community Foundation and Red Cross teams to support communities in Lethbridge and southwestern Alberta.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, demand for support and services from community-based charities and non-profit organizations has increased. The fund is designed to help organizations carry out their work and meet the needs of those experiencing continued or heightened vulnerability.
