Virtual Summer Series to benefit Special Olympics

Special Olympics Alberta and the Lethbridge Police Service are encouraging residents to hit the pavement and run, bike and walk in the Virtual Summer Series.

The new Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) series-style event is comprised of three legs – biking, running and walking – that can be tackled as an individual or as part of a team. Though it involves a trio of exercises, participants can choose to register for any or all of the event legs and choose distance goals that suit their individual fitness level. The suggested time frame for each activity is 30 days – starting with biking June 15, running July 15 and walking Aug. 15.

“Due to COVID 19 we had to think outside the box this year,” explained LETR member and LPS Cst. Braylon Hyggen. “Our regular summer fundraising events had to be cancelled but we wanted to ensure there was still an opportunity for the community to come together virtually – not only to support the Special Olympics athletes but enjoy some time outdoors working on their own personal fitness goals.”

Virtual Summer Series participants are encouraged to set a goal for each leg, track their steps and distance each month using their fitness app of choice and log their results with Special Olympics Alberta. Suggested biking goals range from 25 to 1,000 kilometres (or more or less depending on your fitness level), running 25 to 500 km and walking 25,000 to 500,000 steps.

Individuals who participate in all three legs will be presented with a 2020 Virtual Summer Series medal at the completion of the event. Distances submitted during the running and walking legs will also be added to Special Olympics Walk the World with Me campaign.

The cost to register is $15 per leg or $45 for all three and proceeds benefit more than 3,300 Alberta Special Olympics athletes by providing both training and virtual socializing opportunities to ensure good mental health during these challenging times.
