A 29-year-old man facing several criminal charges following a police standoff in Lundbreck last week made his first appearance Tuesday in Lethbridge provincial court.

Shaine William Smith, who remains in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, was represented by duty counsel during the brief hearing, and his matter was simply adjourned to next Tuesday.

Smith is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, drug possession, resist/obstruct a peace officer, possession of stolen property and possession of break-in instruments.

At about 5:20 p.m. last Friday, the Crowsnest Pass RCMP responded to an assault at a residence in Lundbreck where a man had assaulted another man, then fled and barricaded himself in another house, possibly with a firearm.

Officers from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Piikani RCMP detachments surrounded the house and waited for the emergency response team and police dog service. After negotiations with the suspect failed, the response team burst into the home, but the suspect fled again. He was apprehended a short distance away by the police dog.

Police reported the victim of the assault suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
