Man charged after robbery at northside business

Lethbridge police have charged a 30-year-old man following reports of a robbery at a northside business early Monday morning.
Police responded to a security alarm at a business in the 300-block of 5 Street South about 1 a.m. and found a door broken and ajar but no one inside. About 30 minutes later, police responded to a robbery at a business in the 500-block of 13 Street North in which a man walked behind the counter and struck the clerk several times before grabbing some cigarettes and leaving. A subject was located a short time later nearby and charged in connection with both incidents.
Derek Orrin Smith, of no fixed address, has been charged with: robbery; shop breaking to commit theft; fail to comply with probation order; and fail to comply with an undertaking. He remains in custody while awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.
