Hey kids, do you love to read? Do you enjoy colouring and drawing? If you answered “YES” to both then we have some ideas for you!
Lethbridge Public Library is celebrating the 2nd annual “I Read Canadian Day,” on February 17.
“I Read Canadian Day” is a national day of celebration of Canadian books for young people. As a tribute, we are creating a collaborative community “art quilt” and we need your submissions. You are invited to download a “quilt square” from our website (lethlib.ca), or design your own paper “quilt square” by drawing an image from your favourite book, of your favourite author, or anything related to our “I Read Canadian” theme.
Email your completed square to us at LPLKidsSubmissions@lethlib.ca and watch the quilt grow on our website and Facebook page.
You’ll be able to view the completed community quilt on our website, or during our special “I Read Canadian Read-Aloud Storytimes” during the week of February 15-19 on Facebook (facebook.com/LethlibKids).
Not sure what to read? Just in time for Valentine’s Day, why not try “Franklin’s Valentines” by Paulette Bourgeois.
Other great Canadian children’s authors include Marie-Louise Gay (“Stella” series), Phoebe Gilman (“Jillian Jiggs” series), Barbara Reid (with her beautiful, bright clay illustrations), Ruth Ohi (“Fox and Squirrel” series), Jeremy Tankard (“Hungry Bird” series), Mélanie Watts (“Scaredy Squirrel” series), and lullaby baby board books by renowned First Nations storyteller Richard Van Camp.
For older readers in Grades 4-7, pick titles from the Rocky Mountain Book Award (rmba.info), including these non-fiction titles: “What the Eagle Sees: Indigenous Stories of Rebellion and Renewal” by Eldon Yellowhorn and Kathy Lowinger, “Sergeant Billy” by Mireille Messier, and “How to Become an Accidental Genius” by Elizabeth MacLeod and Frieda Wishinsky. If you prefer chapter books a few must-reads include: “Dog Driven” by Terry Lynn Johnson, “Nevers” by Sara Cassidy, and “The Very, Very Far North: A Story for Gentle Readers and Listeners” by Dan Bar-El.
You can also find a complete listing of books by Eric Walters, founder of “I Read Canadian Day,” at ericwalters.net, and visit ireadcanadian.com/day to learn more about the national “I Read Canadian Day” initiative.
Borrow great Canadian children’s books from the Lethbridge Public Library by downloading them or placing them on hold and picking them up through our Curbside Pick Up service.

Finally, have fun reading and drawing a picture about the book you read. We look forward to receiving your submission for our collaborative community art quilt!
