Update: reports that the fire threatening the Village of Carmangay has been contained and residents are able to return to their homes according to a post by Vulcan County
Wildfires burned in at least two areas of the region Sunday afternoon as heavy winds blew through southern Alberta.
RCMP say an out of control fire spanning approximately 10-15 kilometres in the M.D. of Willow Creek forced the evacuation of the Village of Carmangay. Evacuees were being directed to the Claresholm Community Centre.
Another fire burned southwest of Lethbridge on the Blood Reserve, closing parts highway 509 and forcing the evacuation of a portion of east end of the Blood Reserve. A temporary emergency shelter had been set up at the Multi-purpose building in Standoff.
Earlier in the afternoon a message on a City of Lethbridge social media account indicated the city itself was not at risk.
Fire crews and heavy equipment from multiple municipalities worked to battle the fires.
Environment Canada had a wind warning for the area, saying gusts of 100-140 km/h were expected before easing later in the evening.
