BILD inspection program works toward jobsite safety

By Alejandra Pulido-Guzman For the Lethbridge Herald on June 22, 2021.

Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) Lethbridge Region is providing its members with an Inspected Jobsite Program.
“Our members subscribe to a code of ethics, and a commitment to safety for the public but also safety for their workers,” said Bridget Mearns, executive officer.
BILD was formerly known as the Canadian Home Builders Association, which was established in 1982.
BILD Lethbridge Safety Committee Volunteers conduct visits to the construction sites of BILD Lethbridge builders, reminding them and their subcontractors of the importance of safety among their workers and worksites, including COVID protocols.
“I think of Lethbridge as a city that is big enough to matter, but small enough to get things done. There are many examples of made-in-Lethbridge solutions. This program is a made-in-Lethbridge program that does not exist in any other industry associations in the province (and perhaps across the country),” said Mearns.
Safety needs to be at the top of our minds and BILD Lethbridge continues to do its part with this on-going safety initiative, making sure residential construction sites of BILD members maintain the highest degree of responsibility for safety in the workplace. BILD Lethbridge recommends that consumers ask questions about safety when choosing a home builder or renovator.
Their members are dedicated to work safety and committed to professionalism, consumer protection and zero injuries on each job site.
When conducting jobsite inspections their safety committee volunteers look for various safety requirements in the exterior and interior of the site, as well as worker’s safety.
Some of the criteria for the jobsite exterior include safe storage of combustible materials, proper steps or ramps into the structure, no unnecessary trip hazards and marked and covered open excavations.
Interior criteria includes having handrails for stairs, as well aswindows, doorway openings and decks with guard rails.
For worker’s safety, the criteria includes workers following appropriate safe work procedures, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and using appropriate fall protection where required.
