A local group of London Road residents did their part of tidy up the neighbourhood this past weekend.
Despite the hot sun beating down early in the day, a community cleanup took place around the area with a garbage pickup crew of roughly a dozen bringing their bags of trash back to Kinsmen Park to be disposed of.
In keeping with sprucing up the neighbourhood, a group of volunteers and also tended to the garden at Kinsmen Park.
“We’re doing a neighbourhood cleanup, just trying to get as many volunteers as possible,” said Chandra Deaust, board member of the London Road Neighbourhood Association. “Helen Schuler (Nature Centre) was fantastic. They donated the bags and gloves. Everybody grabbed some bags and gloves and went out into the London Road Neighbourhood and picked up as much garbage as they could.”
Also included in Saturday’s pickup was a survey for garbage pickup, said Deaust, allowing people to keep track of the trash they’re picking up.
“That’s important for stats so they can report that back and it helps drives regulations.”
Deaust said the London Road Neighbourhood Association got the idea for a cleanup from another neighbourhood.
“Copperwood does this annually,” she said. “So we decided to do this here and I think we’ll make this an annual thing. Hopefully it grows every year and we get more people out and keep our neighbourhood clean and looking good.”
Gift certificates were also purchased and handed out at Saturday’s cleanup with local businesses putting up posters in their windows to promote the event.
