Charges against a 34-year-old man arrested in 2020 after police seized drugs from a southside hotel room, will be withdrawn when the matter returns to court next month.
The matter for Carmon Shane Deschamps was in Lethbridge provincial court Thursday, where two counts of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, and one count of possession of the proceeds of crime were to be withdrawn after the judge was told the accused had died. The hearing was adjourned to March 3, however, to determine if Deschamp’s lawyer had previously gotten off the record.
Deschamps, who is from the community of Maskwacis south of Edmonton, was one of two men who were charged after Lethbridge police seized significant quantities of drugs Sept. 10, 2020, following a short-term investigation by members of the priority crimes unit. Police searched a southside hotel room and found about 163 grams of crack cocaine, 76 grams of methamphetamine and nearly $2,200 in cash.
Deschamps and another man, Kyle Mitchell Saddleback, were arrested without incident and police seized additional bags of meth and cocaine, and $1,000 cash. The drugs were estimated to be worth nearly $22,000.
Saddleback of Calgary was last scheduled to attend a court hearing more than a year ago, but when he never showed up and his lawyer lost contact with him, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He has been on warrant ever since.
