A 33-year-old Lethbridge man who was selling drugs to support his own addiction, has received a three-month jail sentence.
Brandon Costar-Tarcon was sentenced Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court, where he pleaded guilty to charges of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon, and possession of the proceeds of crime.
Court was told that in April of last year Lethbridge police had received complaints of drug trafficking at a house in the 900 block of 7 A Street South, in which Costar-Tarcon resided in an upstairs suite.
Police watched the house for several weeks and observed what appeared to be activity consistent with drug trafficking, including hand-to-hand transactions with many people, several of whom were already known to police for their involvement in the drug trade.
On June 9 police arrested Costar-Tarcon as he was working at a construction site, and searched his residence where they found 6.4 grams of methamphetamine and $953.
He admitted possessing the drug for the purpose of selling it, and admitted he obtained the cash though criminal activity. He told police during an interview that he was addicted and sold drugs to support his addiction.
In addition to his jail sentence, Costar-Tarcon will also be on probation for one year following his release from jail. During probation he must provide 25 hours of community service, take counselling for substance abuse, live at an approved residence, and obey a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the first eight months of his probation. He is also prohibited from possessing weapons for life.
