The Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild and Roller Skate Lethbridge are teaming up to bring Roller Discos to Lethbridge on the last Friday of the month from April to July.
Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild chair, Martina Emard, also known as Cherri in the roller derby community, said anyone with roller skates or inline skates are welcome. The discos will take place at the Lethbridge Curling Club located at 74 Mauritania Road West.
“We will have disco lights, a live DJ and a space for beginner skaters to practice skating,” said Emard.
She said they will have loaner skates available, but they only have a limited supply and those who are not comfortable skating or are new at skating should bring a helmet, wrist guards and knee pads.
“For those people who are new to a roller disco event you’ll come in, you’ll grab your skates or put on your own pair of skates and you’ll be able to roll in a big circle at the curling club,” said Emard.
She said the venue provides them with a smooth concrete floor with lots of space to skate around and perhaps dance to the music.
“Proceeds of the Summer Series Roller Discos will go toward Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild junior and adult programs,” said Emard.
She said there will be a concession at the event for food and drinks available for purchase and the proceeds from that will also go towards the guild.
“Roller Skate Lethbridge staff will be there running the event, as well as volunteers from the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild, they will be there to help with the concession, hand out loaner gear and to also help direct traffic on the floor,” said Emard.
She said there will be no lessons at the event as it is hard to teach someone when music is blasting.
“The whole mission behind Roller Skate Lethbridge is to provide rolling opportunities to Lethbridge residents so through the roller discos, outdoor skate parties, lessons and other things that I offer I just want to get as many people skating as possible,” said Emard.
She said the skating community in Lethbridge is bigger than people might think.
“Roller skating is fun, is great exercise. It’s a great way to meet new people,” said Emard.
The first roller disco is tomorrow from 7:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids six to 11 years old and kids five and under are free with a skating adult.
