The lawyers for several people charged in relation to a one-year-old murder case made brief appearances Tuesday in Lethbridge provincial court.
The lawyers simply adjourned their matters to June 1, however, and told court they were still waiting to receive disclosure from the Crown’s office.
“We have nothing yet on the file,” said Calgary lawyer Shamsher Kothari, who represents one of the accused, Miranda Turuk.
Shamsher didn’t express any concerns about waiting for disclosure, and was confident the full disclosure package would be sent from the Crown’s office once it received the information from the RCMP. But he is anxious to receive specific elements of disclosure as quickly as possible, he said.
“All I’m looking for is the synopsis and the official autopsy report on an expedited basis so I can deal with an issue.”
Agents for two other lawyers who represent accused Richard Lavell and Randy Giroux, said they are also waiting for disclosure.
Kirsten Lancee, who represented Giroux’s lawyer Tonii Roulston, said she was going to ask her matter return to court at a later date, but agreed with the earlier recommendation, and said she, too, hopes disclosure will be provided “shortly.”
Lavell, 43, Turuk, 28, and Giroux, 40, all of Fort Macleod, are charged with second degree murder.
A fourth accused, 51-year-old Edward Goodrich of Granum, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder and interfering with a dead body. He is scheduled to be in Fort Macleod provincial court today, while a fifth accused, Michelle Toth, 37, of Claresholm, is scheduled for court on June 14. She is charged with accessory after the fact to murder and interfering with a dead body.
The charges relate to the death of Lane Tailfeathers of Fort Macleod, who was reported missing on June 23, 2021. A month later Tailfeather’s remains were found in a remote area near Crowsnest Pass. RCMP investigators determined the 35-year-old man was killed in Fort Macleod between June 20 and 21 of last year.
