Lethbridge Sport Council is hosting once again hosting their annual Lethbridge Sport Fest after two years of being unable to do so due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The free event will take place at the Servus Sports Centre located at 2501 28 Ave S on Saturday May 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in both turf fields.
“It’s an event for sport organizations to get together under one roof and have participants come and try different sports,” said Shawn Daye-Finley, Lethbridge Sport Council program and event coordinator.
He said Lethbridge Sport Fest is done with the hopes of enticing or increasing membership for the exhibitor organizations.
“Basically it’s an opportunity for families to come and enjoy free and fun interactive day with many, if not most of the sport organizations that operate out of Lethbridge,” said Daye-Finley.
He said this year as a “coming back event” they will be offering those in attendance four come and try it areas instead of the usual three.
“This year will be introducing wrestling mats as well, we have a climbing wall where participants can come and try rock climbing out and that’ll be outdoors because it’s a climbing wall tower,” said Daye-Finley.
He said they will also have skateboarding feature this year with Cousins Skateboarding Community coming from Medicine Hat with their portable skateboard ramps that they bought from the city of Calgary.
“They are great hosts for anybody willing to try skateboarding,” said Daye Finley.
He said their Bike Rodeo will come back this year where people can try out bicycles and learn the rules of the road.
“We have registration for the 2022 Southern Alberta Summer Games. We have some come try it events that will be coming up that we want to make sure people know that there was still something happening in the name of the Southern Alberta Summer Games even though they were postponed and eventually cancelled officially,” said Daye-Finley.
He said this year they will have some new-to-them sport exhibitors including curling, skating, wrestling, horseshoe, skate boarding, soccer, roller hockey, boxing, gymnastics among others.
“I think the key message to me is that there are very few opportunities to experience so many different sports under one roof, we’re just really excited to be able to have it in person again and we hope people take advantage of the free opportunity to come try all those events,” said Daye-Finley.
