The Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch No. 4 launched a Veterans Banner program last month, but it has got off to slow start in receiving submissions.
The program is in conjunction with the City of Lethbridge and the 702 Royal Canadian Airforce Association and is meant to see 91 banners be displayed in locations of significance of veterans across the city from Oct. 1 to Remembrance Day.
“The challenge is the lead time necessary,” said Wayne King, a Legion Salute our Veterans Banner Committee member. “Not only is it terms of sourcing the hardware necessary, but also getting the information from the individual family members and get that prepared in a fashion that can be used by our engravers and the people who prepare the banners and get those manufactured and provided to us in a timely fashion, so they can be put up on the light standards. We do intend that these programs go forward year after year and so we need to preserve the use of the banner over the multi-year program.”
There is only one banner printed currently.
“Unfortunately we are quite a bit short to do a full display this year,” said King.
King said it’s about public awareness.
Year one would see banners set up at the City Hall/Cenotaph area, the train station between First Avenue and Eighth Street, Lethbridge Legion, the Lethbridge Army and Navy Air Force Club area and at the Lethbridge Airport.
