With summer well underway, there are still plenty of activities to be enjoyed around the city. Fort Whoop-Up and the Galt Museum have multiple options for those looking for something to do.
“During the summer time we like to do a lot of tours and experiences, just to take advantage of the weather,” said Abbilynn Thom, Fort Whoop-Up site coordinator.
She said they have several experiences going on, and each week they offer three different experiences.
“The Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) Experience, which looks at Blackfoot history and culture. We also have the Metis experience, which looks at Metis culture and history. We have the Belly River Valley Experience that takes people on a tour in the river valley and looks at the plants and the history of the area. And then we also have the Life and Labour of a Fort Trader Experience, which focuses specifically on Fort Whoop-Up and what life would’ve been here like,” said Thom.
She said they are also offering picnic lunches, which are offered in partnership with Mocha Canada and Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens.
“Lunches that people can order in advance, which are inspired by the cultures in the area, so like bison meat, Saskatoon berries and stuff like that. They can have a nice picnic down here, do a tour, a wagon ride and just spend a nice afternoon,” said Thom.
The experience includes Fort Whoop-Up admission, guided tour, wagon ride and hands-on activities. Guided tours are provided upon request. Also included is one admission to the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden.
And as far as the Galt Museum and Archives goes, Thom said they are offering walking tours that include walking through the Mountain View and St. Patrick’s Cemeteries.
“They look at some of the historical figures that are buried there and the history surrounding that,” said Thom.
She added that they also have their regular programming going on.
