It is that time of the year once again, Taber corn has arrived in Lethbridge. The kick-off distribution took place Monday with multiple locations across southern Alberta, including six in Lethbridge.

By Thursday afternoon Nelly Penner with Johnson Fresh Farms had already been praised by customers who purchased corn on Monday and came back for more.

“This is my first day here, but I was here a couple years ago as well. This is definitely a very busy site,” said Penner.

Penner worked for Johnson Fresh Farms four years ago and decided to come back for the season this year. She said she has been rotating across other locations through the week and was happy to be located at the South side Shell Thursday.

“Yesterday I was in Cardston, and I think I had half the amount already sold by this time of day (1:30 p.m.), so it’s quite a bit busier here,” said Penner.

She said the corn is looking pretty good for being the first week.

“A lot of times in the first week we get a lot of the young ones, the little ones, but there’s some really good chunky ones in here, and even like if you open it and look the kernels are very full, so they are looking really good this year,” said Penner.

She said that is one of the reasons many customers have come back within days of buying their first round of corn.

“A lot of people have come back that bought some on Monday saying ‘wow it’s so good this year’,” said Penner.

She explained that at the moment they are selling their peaches and cream variety, later in the season they will be selling their solid yellow variety and they will have both for a while, but towards the end of the season only the solid yellow corn will be available.

“A lot of people like that one for canning or freezing towards the end of the season,” said Penner.

She said stands are open usually from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. unless they run out of product.

“But I think if that would happen, they would bring me some from one of the other sites in town because this one is so busy,” said Penner.
