The second time was a charm for Lethbridge’s Naomi Leam at the Canada Summer Games as she won the silver medal in the 50-metre freestyle swimming as a Special Olympian athlete in Niagara earlier this month.
Leam came fifth in the preliminary rounds to qualify for the finals in her last of five events at the Games.
“It feels good,” said Leam, who is cognitively delayed.
“I have won a lot of different games. I try every day to pass everything and go swim really fast in all of them.”
Her first Canada Summer Games were in 2017 in Winnipeg where she went medal less, but she did not let that experience discourage her, as she learned how to kick faster at the end of the laps while learning from good coaches.
“(She had) a lot of mental training and a lot more focused on her swim events compared to 2017,” said coach Wendy Nelson.
“She showed a lot more focus and a lot more determination when she hit the pool. That was one thing that we really noticed a difference in.”
The medal finish was really tight right down to the end.
“I was very happy I won this medal,” said Leam.
The first placed winner was 35.98 seconds, Leam finished with 37.52 and third place was 37.54.
“Oh my god,” said Nelson, on her reaction.
“I’ve never screamed so loud in my life. It was the best swim I ever seen her do.”
Leam’s Summer Games experience was interesting.
“And meeting a lot of new people and swimmers all across the province and you get to see old friends (and coaches)as well,” said Leam.
This was Leam’s last Summer Games as she aged out.
