Residents find election signs destroyed on lawns

Residents of a westside neighbourhood awoke Thursday morning to see election signs of their preferred candidate destroyed.

The older tree-lined shaded area just east of Nicholas Sheran Park has numerous signs on private property showing support for Shannon Phillips.

Sometime before 7:30 a.m. area residents saw numerous signs had been cut in half.  Damaged signs stretched all the way down one block and could be seen on others. Some signs were sliced cleanly in half from top to bottom’ at least one other was cut or ripped from the wooden stakes it was attached to.

Several residents – who didn’t want to be identified for fear of repercussions – tried to tape up the damaged signs on their properties.

One told The Herald “there’s no need for this. It’s a lot of stupidity.”

Another who has lived on the street since 1980, said it’s the first time he’s seen signs damaged.

Mary Combs, who has lived on the block for a year, said she called police while another neighbour called Phillips’ constituency office about the damage.

“The UCP scares me,” said Combs who last year was involved in a tailgating incident on Scenic Drive with a truck carrying a Keep Alberta Strong banner which prompted her to pull into the police station parking lot for her safety.

“I hope someone has a doorbell camera somewhere” to catch an image of the perpetrators, said Combs who says she loves the area, which she called an open-minded neighbourhood.

“We’re 100 per cent NDP,” Combs said.

The small group of residents standing on the street talking about the incident said the signs were intact on Wednesday night so the damage had to have occurred sometime before dawn.

Lethbridge West Liberal candidate Pat Chizek – who is running in her second election here – recently told The Herald she’d seen signs destroyed.

“I could never could figure out why a sign is so threatening. I’m going to say probably two-thirds of the signs I put up last election did not come back,” Chizek said.

“I have no idea” why, she said.

lumpy

This is your typical UCP Qanon-loving thug at work.

Well lumpy, I suppose I could have taken photos of numerous signs that had been driven over, bent, literally torn out of the ground and tossed in ditches of Phillips and Miyashiro’s opponents, but then why cry to the media.
Further, several weeks ago Cheryl Seaborn went to the press about vandalism to her signs. The response from Phillips was, and I quote loosely, when you have strong support there will be vandalism. karma is a ________

Either way, is not right….certainly being done by folks who are not the upper crust members of society. I disagree re: the photos…let’s have some photos of the ruined UCP signs too. Certainly, in my nearby rural riding the only ruined signs I have seen are the NDP ones. I have an NDP sign which has escaped ruination and many of my neighbours have UCP signs that have not been ruined or defaced either. What this does indicate though, is the glaring political divide now in Alberta. What will be interesting is that if the UCP win, is how the progressive conservative MLAs within the UCP will cope with the now, radical right wing libertarian UCP (not the conservatism of my Alberta grandparents)….maybe not too surprising out here because there was significant support for the Maxim Bernier People’s Party of Canada during the last federal election. .

Ok, thanks!

It also appears that they were not torn or ripped….they may have been pulled up and it looks like laid in a pile.

buckwheat

Yes but two of the support wires were missing. So theft I guess, terrorist attack??? Run for cover. I see Miyashiro has drifted off the Phillips Carlson and Crowson party line. Has posted signs on public property, scenic drive and Hey 4. Must be an internal poll that may not show well. Shannon won’t be happy with this. Tsk tsk tsk.

lumpy

Did you put them back up after the picture, buck? Staged at best.

buckwheat

Yeh I figured you would say that. That would be your trick. Probably invented it and staged them yourself. Nasty little NDP’er. Note that when Seaborns were being tossed, run over and damaged your shining star Phillips stated publicly when you’re popular you can expect vandalism. Guess Neudorf is popular

The destroyed NDP election signs are only a reminder of how the NDP will destroy Alberta’s economy.
I encourage every one to read Licia Corbella’s article in the Fridays Calgary Sun “Disaster from the Pastl
That is one big big reason why Notley refuses to talk about her past.

Blah blah blah. Intelligence is not one of your qualities.

yup, support the illegal so long as it goes with your bent. just like those that support the criminal cops abusing their trust and power with regard to phillips. police state ok, so long as criminality supports your preferences. the thing is, the police state will also undermine your preferences…that is a big reason why fascism is to be opposed…always

Grumpyguy

Wow! This has to be the crime of the century! Wonder how the police investigation is going. Perhaps it is all a publicity stunt?
