The Town of Vulcan is getting ready to welcome visitors beaming in from all parts of the province and beyond to take part in their annual Spock Days this weekend.

Vulcan tourism adviser Olivia McLean said Spock Days brings the community together and gives everyone an opportunity to enjoy all things Star Trek.

“Whether that’s the parade, or the smaller events that happen around town, we also have softball tournament that goes on, so tons of people get involved in that, it’s just a really fun weekend in Vulcan and it’s basically one of two events that happen all summer,” said McLean.

She said this year the parade will see approximately 30 participants, with the Lethbridge Piper band being one of them.

“There’s lots of cars and floats and horses, we got a wide variety of different things being put in,” said McLean.

Community Services manager for the Town of Vulcan, Chris Gauthier said the parade will take place Saturday morning, and a taste of Vulcan will take place in the afternoon along with a baseball tournament and a beer gardens all weekend.

“We are hoping to have a strong turnout, but our tourism numbers are already higher than last year’s as far as people coming into the tourism centre (Trek Station) earlier, so we hope it’s more of a busier Spock days for sure,” said Gauthier.

He said the centre has a fresh look inside as some things have been moved around, and some others have been added.

“We did a refresher within the tourism centre, we changed out some of the costume displays, we added to the memorabilia collection, added new merchandise, just kind of freshen things up,” said Gauthier.

He said even though it is not a huge change, this will give tourists an opportunity to experience new things at the centre, as many come on a yearly basis.

Another exciting event coming up this summer at the Town of Vulcan is the 30th anniversary of their Star Trek convention, VulCon during the last week of July.

“Last year, we sold 75 tickets for the event and this year we have over 100 tickets sold, so we have had a pretty good increase. Hopefully we can be at the 150 tickets mark,” said Gauthier.

He said Bruce Horak, who plays Hemmer the blind alien from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Emily Coutts who plays Lt. Keyla Detmer from Star Trek: Discovery, will be their celebrity guests this year.
