When a Lethbridge resident realized his truck and trailer had just been stolen, he didn’t wait for the police to give chase.
The man called police to report the stolen vehicle, but he was already chasing the culprits. By the time police caught up to the owner, he had already found his truck and trailer abandoned by the side of the road, but the thieves were gone.
The owner showed police video surveillance footage which showed Paul Wayen McCarthy and another man entering his property at 10:37 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2022. The video showed McCarthy get into a 2010 Dodge Ram and drive away, following the other man who was driving his own vehicle.
McCarthy, who has a criminal record with numerous convictions for possession of stolen property, including motor vehicles, and for fleeing from police, pleaded guilty recently in Lethbridge court of justice to one count of motor vehicle theft. He was sentenced to six months in jail, but given credit for 159 days spent in remand custody, leaving a sentence of only 21 days.
“He does have quite a record for driving offences, and regularly receives jail time,” Crown Prosecutor Shane Morrison pointed out.

Another perfect example of a broken judicial and penal system! Criminals know they will only get a slap on the wrist and continue to commit crimes knowing that it they get caught, it will be easy time paid for by the taxpayer!
