College students settle into new homes

Students arrived and unpacked their cars as they moved into residence to begin a new school year at Lethbridge College on Saturday.

“I would say the focus is to be a community (and) to be a family because you know people move away,” said Hannah Blackmer, Lethbridge College resident assistant.

“Some people, this is their first time moving away from their family. So as RAs, what we’re wanting to do is to connect with everybody to be more of like a family figure type of situation. And to  make it more enjoyable and (a) more relaxing transition to help those who need help.  And if people are struggling, that’s what we’re here for. So, everybody has somebody that they can connect with and talk too.”

College residents are at full capacity with 520 spaces filled with over 500 students.

“Like our supervisor said, it’s been couple of years since full capacity has hit and so we’re just really excited to have everybody,” said Blackmer.

“I’m excited,” said Haily Neyedly.“It’s anticipated. We were excited last night and got here early and moving in. Overwhelmed, for sure, because a lot of stuff to unpack but it’ll be good.”

Neyedly was excited to start her interior design course this week.

“I’m excited to meet some new people and just be in a different environment,” said Neyedly.

Emma  Unrau was moving into residence in her second year at the institution with the help of her sisters, Sandra and Elizabeth.

“I don’t know, a sense of community, living on my own away from my parents, independence,” said Unrau.
