Lots to do in city for Victoria Day long weekend

With the Victoria Day long weekend now here residents might be wondering what is there to do around the city for those who are enjoying a staycation.

Lethbridge has many things to offer, many places to explore and a multitude of activities to do outside of scheduled events. And with many of those activities free to enjoy residents could enjoy the long weekend without having to travel outside of the city.

For those interested in art, Casa offers a place to enjoy local talent without breaking the bank. This weekend residents who visit Casa can explore three exhibits free of charge.

In the main gallery they can find Trajectories a University of Lethbridge students exhibition, in the Concourse Gallery the “A Capella Allusions” by Eve Ford and in the Saokitapi Gallery they can enjoy “NDN Girlhood” by Evelyn Mikayla Martin.

Something else residents can enjoy free of charge is the ability to take a stroll along the river valley. Residents can enjoy the natural landscape by visiting the Elizabeth Hall Wetlands, Popson Park and Cottonwood Park in the West side of the city, Pavan Park and the Alexander wilderness park on the North end of the city, or Indian Battle Park in a more central location.

The coulees offer a variety of amenities for residents to enjoy, including the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. With a free admission, is a place where people can learn about the diverse wild life that calls Lethbridge home, take a self-guided tour of the river valley, and admire the High Level bridge.

The Helen Schuler will open this weekend Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

And for those looking for scheduled events, The Herald has put together a list of events taking place over the weekend from various local organizations.

Happening on May 18:

– Dog lovers and furry companions can take part on the Wag and Walk event taking place at Henderson Lake Park at 9 a.m. Bring along a non-perishable food item or dog food/treats to support those in need and local animal shelters. Local vendors will have booths and displays set up around the lake along with food trucks.

– Speed Friending at the Lethbridge Public Library Main Branch from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Speed Friending-similar to speed dating, is for people looking to make new friends. Whether you are new in town or just looking to expand your social circle, this event is the perfect opportunity to connect with new people.

– Discover Downtown Day at AAC Work on 318 7 Street South from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Allied Arts Council Works is thrilled to participate in this exciting scavenger hunt event in collaboration with Cookie Crimes. Get ready to embark on a journey through downtown Lethbridge, uncovering the hidden gems of our vibrant community, including its unique art, rich history, and thriving small businesses. Enjoy Live Music with Karen Romanchuk from noon to 1 p.m. and Artist Demonstration with Melissa Neumeier of Blanca Handmade Jewelry from noon to 3 p.m.

– Doggy Derby at The Rocky Mountain Turf Club at 1 p.m. This free event will showcase a silent auction and food drop-off with all funds raised going to the Lethbridge & District Humane Society.

– Live horse races at The Rocky Mountain Turf Club from 1 to 5 p.m.

– Chill Art Afternoons for Tweens: Friendship bracelets from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lethbridge Public Library Main Branch. This program is a drop-in, self-directed activity designed for ages 9 to 12. This month theme is beads. Make your own Taylor Swift inspired friendship bracelet, using a variety of colours and spelling out different words and catchphrases.
