A 27-year-old woman who started a fight in a public bathroom and several weeks later broke into a home, has been sentenced to just over two months in jail.
Doreen Makiya Crying Head received a 66-day sentence Friday in Lethbridge court of justice after she pleaded guilty to old charges of assault, mischief, obstructing a peace officer, breach of probation and failure to attend court.
On Aug. 30, 2022 police were called to the Park Place Mall where a woman told them she had been assaulted. The woman was in the bathroom when Crying Head entered and occupied the stall next to her.
The victim said Crying Head accused her of using drugs, and the two women began arguing. After the first woman left the bathroom and waited for her brother outside the men’s bathroom, Crying Head walked up to her and punched her in the face.
“A fight ensued at that point and was ultimately broken up by some bystanders,” Crown Prosecutor James Rouleau told court.
Less than three months later, on Nov. 22, Crying Head and another woman entered a westside home and fell asleep in the laundry room. Crying Head was charged with break and enter, but she pleaded guilty to mischief, instead.
The obstruction charge stems from a traffic stop on June 15, 2021 in Cardston. Crying Head was a passenger in the vehicle, and when she identified herself to police she provided two false names before they identified her and she admitted she used a cousin’s name. Court was told she was intoxicated at the time.
Although sentenced to a total of 66 days in jail, Crying Head was credited for the equivalent of 39 days spent in custody waiting to resolve her charges, leaving her with 27 days to serve.
Additional charges of failing to attend for fingerprinting and trying to avoid arrest by giving a false name were withdrawn.
