The Rocky Mountain Turf Club went to the dogs during the opening weekend of the spring race meet.
And it was a bark for spectators and participants alike as the track hosted a special fundraiser for the Lethbridge Humane Society.
Celebrating National Dog Rescue Weekend, the turf club on Saturday staged the Astro Insurance Dachshund Derby in between races on the track and on Sunday, blustery weather couldn’t dampen enthusiasm for a doggy derby fashion show which moved indoors after the first race of the day as rain fell.
The audience Sunday packing the main floor of the grandstand was pawsitively enthusiastic as a range of dogs, decked out for the occasion, were carried by their owners or treaded past the judging panel from the Humane Society.
The event featured a pet food drop off for cats and dogs both days along with a silent auction.
Twenty dogs participated in the fashion show with five dogs strutting their stuff between each race.
The event was the first annual at the turf club, said Curtis Mueller, who was one of the judges.
The race meet will continue next weekend with post time at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
And the action will continue on weekends through June.
