A man who assaulted his girlfriend while walking through a field on the north side of the city has received a short jail sentence and a year of probation.

Cordelle Bad Arm and his girlfriend were walking near Immanuel Christian School on 6 Avenue North last Friday when the man, who was pushing a scooter, swung the scooter at the woman, kicked her and attempted to head butt her.

Two other people nearby witnessed the assault and called the police as the altercation continued.

“They were yelling at each other, having an argument,” Crown Prosecutor Lisa Weich said this week in Lethbridge court of justice, where Bad Arm pleaded guilty to charges of assault and drug possession.

The woman ran from Bad Arm and attempted to climb a chain link backstop on the baseball field, but Bad Arm grabbed her and pulled her off the backstop, then continued his assault.

“He held onto her hand and her arm and dragged her down the street,” Weich said.

Police arrived moments later and arrested Bad Arm, and while searching his pockets they found two small bags containing a total of 1.3 gms of methamphetamine.

Bad Arm was sentenced to seven days in jail, but given full credit for time he had already spent in remand custody since his arrest. He must also adhere to numerous conditions while on probation, including he be assessed and receive counselling for drug abuse and domestic violence or as otherwise directed. He is also prohibited from buying, possessing or consuming illicit drugs, and he must attend the Bringing the Spirit Home detox program.
