The Southern Alberta Ethnic Association (SAEA) will be celebrating Heritage Day with lots of performers and food from various cultures in Galt Gardens on Monday.
Heritage Day was first declared a holiday in the province of Alberta in 1974 and is a day to celebrate the diverse cultures which make Lethbridge the place we call home.
The Heritage Day event is one of SAEA’s biggest and longest running events.
Anastasia Sereda, Executive Director of SAEA, says Heritage Day is an exciting opportunity to celebrate other people’s culture.
“Heritage Day is really an exciting opportunity to celebrate one another’s culture as well as your own. So, it’s really just a showcase of cultural pride as well. and just to showcase who the folks are that make up the community and what their cultural backgrounds are,” said Sereda.
Food is a large part of many cultures and there will be no shortage of any of it on Heritage day. There will be food trucks as well as booths in the pergola from various different cultures such as Africa, Asian, European and Latin.
There will also be lots of entertainment including a Persian musical performance, belly dancing, hula performances and even highland dancing.
There will also be a kid’s zone so everyone of all ages can enjoy the festivities.
Events such as this one cannot happen without volunteers. Sereda says its a great way to get involved with the community, as well as enjoy some great food.
“So, if someone wants to snag a free meal, we provide volunteer opportunities so people can help get involved,” said Sereda.
Volunteers can contact SAEA at 403-320-1577 if they are interested in the volunteer opportunity.
