A decision by city council on financial support for the Lethbridge and District Exhibition had not been determined by press time.

Council by mid-evening was still addressing public hearings that began in early afternoon on several proposed housing developments.

Two of those hearings were on proposed apartment buildings adjacent to, and across from London Road Market on 6 Ave. Both would be six-storey buildings with as many as 49 apartment units.

Another hearing called for rezoning of properties at 404 and 408 12 St. S. to Direct Control to allow for their consolidation and the development of 12 dwelling units to appear as four townhouses with secondary suites and a fourplex.

And council also addressed a bylaw amendment for properties located at 605-5 St. S. and 510 6 Ave. S. which would also consist of buildings six storeys in height with as many as 49 apartment units.

Council heard from Chief Financial Officer Darrell Mathews earlier in the day that an additional residential property tax increase of 2.24 per cent on top of the already approved 5.1 per cent tax increase for 2025 would be Administration’s preference.

Mathews presented several options to council for their consideration including one which have called for a reduction of service levels by 2027.

Other options included a partial tax increase for 2025 which would use the full ongoing corporate budget contingency of $1.5 million and increase taxation only by 1.4 per cent. Another option called for a partial tax increase in 2025 using $1 million from the corporate budget contingency, an immediate additional tax increase of one per cent and $1.275 million in one-time BAU and departmental carryover funding each year to fund the $4.1 million required for continuing operations of the Exhibition.

A third option called for a deferred tax increase which would have used all $1.5 million of corporate budget contingency with one-time funding of $2.6 million required to cover operating costs in 2025 and 2026 which would have delayed a full tax increase until 2027 which a report by Mathews said would create a budget gap.

There is always an easy route that they will take and that administration will favour.. Keep on spending on a money pit and just raise taxes on the suckers.
