Lethbridge Police have charged three people with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a 34-year-old woman whose body was found in a southside motel room Dec. 28.
Two of the people charged are in police custody while a third suspect who police had been seeking turned herself in on Friday evening.
Drew Austin Waters, 28, of Cranbrook is charged with first-degree murder, arson to property, and possession of a prohibited firearm. Kyle Douglas Doddridge, 36, of Lethbridge, is charged with first degree murder and arson to property.
Both men were remanded in custody. Waters is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 8 while Doddridge is scheduled for Jan. 27.
Police had earlier issued an arrest warrant for the third suspect, 23-year-old Melissa Christelle Tidlund of Pincher Creek, who police say came to the police station and turned herself in on Friday evening.
Tidlund has been charged with first degree murder and arson to property.
On Dec. 28, police responded to reports of a suspicious death at a motel along the 2200 block of 7 Avenue South and located a deceased female, later identified as Christina Webber, inside a ground floor room.
Members of the Criminal Investigation Division assumed the investigation and determined that Webber had died on Dec. 26, two days prior to being found. Police confirmed that her death involved a firearm.
Staff Sgt. Pete Christos of the LPS Criminal Investigation Section said the three suspects were in Webber’s room on Dec. 26 and removed property before fleeing in an SUV, which was later parked along the 500 block of 7 Avenue South and set on fire.
“Webber’s body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Calgary, where an autopsy confirmed the manner of death as a homicide,” says Christos.
At that point, LPS was able to identify the victim as Webber.
During the course of the investigation, police obtained and executed search warrants at multiple properties in the city.
Police arrested Waters on Dec. 29 as he was leaving the Lethbridge Correctional Centre after serving a weekend sentence for unrelated offences. On Dec. 30, police executed a warrant at a home along the 200 block of 19 Street North and arrested Doddridge following a short standoff with members of the tactical team.
“LPS wants to advise the public that this was an isolated incident and there is no further risk to the public,” said Christos.
He added that the investigation is ongoing and at was unable to share any details about a possible motive for the murder.
“We have a lot of information to go through. We are following up with every lead that we were given. It’s going to take some time.”
Christos said Webber’s death was the only homicide of 2024 and LPS is doing everything they can to follow the evidence.
“We take these matters very seriously. When someone’s life has been taken, we throw a lot of resources at it and we work around the clock in order to make sure that we don’t lose evidence, get those people accountable and into custody.”
