High-risk offenders will be held accountable through Alberta’s new ankle bracelet monitoring program which began Jan 15.
The program is in response to the Federal Government’s bail system, which the Alberta Government finds to be problematic. It will require offenders and accused who pose a public safety risk to be subject to 24/7 court ordered electronic monitoring by Alberta Correctional Services as part of their supervision conditions.
Arthur Green, press secretary for Public Safety and Emergency Services says the GPS tracking device will be monitored 24/7 by a centralized monitoring unity within Alberta Correctional Services.
“A centralized program allows Alberta Correctional Services to supervise individual compliance and ensure consistent oversight of high-risk offenders who are on bail and community release with electronic monitoring conditions throughout the province,” said Green.
Previously, the supervision only occurred during regular business hours and did not include GPS monitoring.
Green added that the Fugitive Apprehension Sheriffs Support Team within the Alberta Sheriffs department will support the program by assisting with the execution of warrants on individuals who violate the terms of the electronic monitoring program. The electronic monitoring will protect Albertans and communities by helping secure offender-restricted areas including victims’ residences, places of employment and any other area deemed off-limits as part of the individual’s bail or community-release conditions.
According to a government release, the launch of this program is a result of extensive stakeholder engagements and an open technology vendor procurement process and will enhance community supervision with around-the-clock monitoring. Additionally, this program aligns Alberta with programs in other provinces across Canada.
