A Grade 12 student from Catholic Central High School is one of five recipients of the 2025 Women of Distinction Awards who and she will be receiving The Young Woman of Promise Award during the 49th annual awards dinner on International Women’s Day.
Anna Campmans, who was nominated by CCH’s family school liaison counsellor, Mallory Kristjanson will be receiving her award on March 8, and she shared with the Herald that she is very excited.
“To be totally honest, I was excited to be nominated for something, especially by Mallory as she is someone I look up to, but at first I didn’t know what the award was all about,” said Campmans.
She said Kristjanson is a beacon of positivity in the school and that is why she looks up to her, so the fact that she nominated her for the award meant a lot to her.
“As I learned more about what the young woman of distinction award is all about, I realized I was just so honoured to be seen by someone like Mallory, whose so incredible and such a powerful and incredible woman,” said Campmans.
It became obvious that the feeling is mutual when Kristjanson explained why she made the decision to nominate Campmans.
“The first day that I met Anna Campmans, I knew that this was a young woman of distinction, a woman of promise,” said Kristjanson. “From the very first day that she walked into the school at Catholic Central High School, she lit up the hallways with not only her love and her compassion for others, but her way and her vibrancy to give kindness to others.”
She said that Campmans would go to the office almost every day to ensure that every single one of the ladies that are working as office administrators knew that they were beautiful, that they were amazing and she would thank them for the work that they did every single day.
“Always the most compassioned and kind student to each of them, making sure that they were always recognized for the work that they do. It takes a young adult of Anna’s caliber to be nominated for this award, never mind as a recipient,” said Kristjanson.
She added that when she was a little bit older than Campmans is now, she was also the recipient of the Young Woman of Distinction Award, and to be nominated for that was a blessing, but to actually be the recipient was huge
“And Anna distinguishes every single characteristic of what a woman of distinction is, and not only has she dedicated hours of service within the community of Lethbridge, it is also the amazing work that she has done at the Catholic Central High School to ensure that we are community here,” said Kristjanson.
She said Campmans is a student that will make sure that no one is sitting by themselves at lunch, she makes sure they are included, and she makes sure that there are always programming and activities that are inclusive to kids.
But Campmans kindness goes beyond the school’s walls. Campman said she volunteers and takes part of multiple activities within the community.
“I’ve been involved in 4H for quite a few years and it’s focused on agriculture and community building and leadership for youth, and we do all sorts of things,” said Campmans.
She said some of the activities she takes part of with 4H include volunteering at the soup kitchen, snow shoveling for community members who are unable to do it themselves.
“From September to November, I was volunteering at the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre and I love what they do there. It’s so incredible, everyone there is so amazing and hardworking. And that was such an amazing experience for me,” said Campmans.
She said the experience was great because that is something she wants to do, she said she wants to advocate for people that need help advocating for themselves.
“That’s what I want to do when I’m older. So that was an incredible first step, I think in the direction that I want to be going in,” said Campmans.
She added that she is also the president of school council at CCH and that allows her to help plan and run all sorts of activities in the school for students.
Campmans’ mother Michelle Campmans said that this year, as her daughter started Grade 12, she had to ask her to step away from a few activities as she noticed her daughter was not having enough time for herself.
Michelle shared that as much as it was a shocked to find out her daughter was nominated for the award, she was not truly surprised because of who Anna is and she said she is very grateful to Kristjanson for nominating her daughter.
“It’s huge. It’s actually hard for me to talk about it without being emotional. I’m very proud of her. Anna first told me that Mallory had nominated her for an award, but she didn’t say which award,” said Michelle. “And when I found out which award it was, I was just overcome.”
The YWCA Lethbridge & District Women of Distinction Awards will also be honouring Maral Kiani Tari, Carly Adams, Sayeh Zielke and Beverly Muendel-Atherstone.
