Vox Musica ready to host ‘Celtic Kitchen Party’

Vox Musica Choral Society will be joined by Wander West Celtic and Beyond for their upcoming show on Saturday at Southminster United Church titled “Celtic Kitchen Party.”
Vox Musica’s musical director, Joanne Collier says they are excited to go in a slightly different direction than their usual performances, to showcase what the choir members can do, as she believes it is important for choirs to be able go sing in different styles.
“Vox is known to perform with the Symphony, but a couple years ago we did a musical theatre concert, and this time we’re doing a folk music concert from the East Coast and the British Isles,” said Collier. “It’s just something different to do, maybe draw in a different crowd and just have fun with a different kind of music.”
She says it is important for them to do so because it brings out a different side of what people are able to do. She said for this type of music, there may be less pressure, although they are doing some music that is pretty tricky on this concert.
 “Difficult many parts, like the arrangement of Caledonia that we’re doing, there are times when the choir is singing in nine parts. In the choir you have soprano, Alto, tenor, bass. So that’s four parts, but each of those parts is divided in two, and then there’s one part where it split into two different choirs,” says Collier.
She says that even though it’s folk music, it’s a contemporary setting and therefore there are lots of beautiful harmonies. Collier adds that this requires a lot of concentration because there are a lot of “moving parts.”
“And of course, when we start doing stuff with Wonder West this Tuesday, that will add another element of stuff that’s going on,” says Collier.
Which is something Wander West Celtic and Beyond is looking forward to, as member Carolyn Scott says, they have never performed with singers before, since they have been a band only for two and half years, a result from loneliness and desperation for music brought up by the Covid-19 pandemic, so they will also have some adjusting to do.
Scott explains where the name of the band came from and says all the members, except her, wandered to Lethbridge from different parts of the world, and the part of “and beyond” it’s because even though they began as a band focused on Celtic music, they found themselves playing all kinds of music.
“We originally started with five members. The one that we don’t have now, was from New Brunswick, Tim is from Ontario, he’s our guitar player and my husband, our violinist Alina Khvatova is from Russia and wandered to Western Canada, Suzie Irwin our flute player was born and raised in Illinois and has ended up in Lethbridge, and I’m the accordionist and I’m a local,” says Scott.
The concert will take place this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Southminster United Church. Tickets are available in advance at voxmusicalethbridge.org, Casa or at the door on event night.
