SACLA ready to host Community Cabaret

By Sam Leishman - Lethbridge Herald Local Journalism Initiative Reporter on March 20, 2025.

A night filled with music and fun for a great cause is just a couple of weeks away.

The Southern Alberta Community Living Association (SACLA) and the Geomatic Attic are teaming up for the seventh year in a row to host the Community Cabaret on April 5 at the German Canadian Club.

SACLA is one of Lethbridge’s most prominent voices and service providers for those living with disabilities. Christina Spooner, Director of Home and Community Supports, says the organization’s goal is to ensure individuals are connected to their community, able to contribute and feel valued.

Breaking down boundaries and community spirit are the key inspirations that have kept the cabaret going for all these years, says Spooner.

“Sometimes [events are] too expensive, or sometimes it’s accessibility and they can’t get into the building. We wanted to make it an event that’s accessible for everybody. Part of what we do is extend the invitation to the whole community, regardless of your socio-economic background or your disability. Just come and enjoy the music.”

Mike Spencer, Geomatic Attic founder, says the cabaret is an important part of his organization’s music schedule and it’s always a pleasure to collaborate with SACLA.

“The event fulfills one of our stated goals of being a community minded organization and it gives us great joy to assist in creating a welcoming environment for fun and expression.”

For just $20, tickets include plenty of entertainment, finger food, a cash bar and transportation. A free accessible bus will be available for the cabaret within the city. You’re asked to contact Della at SACLA to make arrangements ahead of time.

Comedian John Pogorzelski will guide the crowd through a performance from the piano and guitar duo Ray Ross and Eric West, jigging with Roy Pogorzelski and a dance party to the rhythm and groove tunes of Hippodrome.

Tickets are available at geomaticattic.ca, or in-person at SACLA or Casa. Doors open at 6:30pm on April 5, with the entertainment program from 7-11 p.m.
