Broyce Jacobs, a two-term MLA for the former Cardston-Taber-Warner provincial riding, passed away March 14. He was 84.

Jacobs served as the Progressive Conservative MLA for the riding in two non-consecutive terms, from 2001 – 2004 before being defeated by then-Alberta Alliance Party member Paul Hinman, and later from 2008 – 2012 before being succeeded by Gary Bikman, a member of the Wildrose Party who later crossed the floor to join the PCs.

A rancher from Mountain View, Jacobs first ran for a seat in the 1979 election as a candidate for Social Credit for Cardston, but was defeated by John Thompson. He later sought the PC nomination for Cardston in 1986 but was defeated by Jack Ady, who went on to win the riding.

In a pair of close-run elections for the Cardston-Taber-Warner riding, in 2004 Jacobs lost by 129-vote margin to Paul Hinman, but battled back in 2008 to defeat Hinman with a razor-thin 38-vote margin to secure the riding.

In his second term as MLA (2008-2012), Jacobs served as Parliamentary Assistant for Agriculture and Rural Development.

Before entering provincial politics, Jacobs served as a councillor for 18 years in the Municipal District of Cardston, and was reeve for 17 of those years.

On Wednesday, Jacobs was recognized in the provincial legislature for his years of service to the riding and province.

“Mr. Broyce G. Jacobs was first elected March 12, 2001, and served until Nov. 21, 2004. He was re-elected in 2008 and served until April 22, 2012. During his years of service he represented the constituency of Cardston-Taber-Warner. Mr. Jacobs passed away on March 14, 2025, at the age of 84. Mr. Jacobs’ family has been invited to attend a more fulsome tribute at a later sitting day. In a moment of silent prayer I ask that you remember former member Broyce Jacobs each as you may have known him.”
