Tea event brews up fascinating info

Tea enthusiasts had the opportunity to learn about the process of making tea, before the boiling process, at an event at the Galt Museum Thursday evening.
Sampath Walgama who has a PhD in agriculture and has worked in the tea industry for 15 years, calls himself a “tea addict.” After immigrating to Canada from his home country Sri Lanka, he couldn’t work in the tea industry due to Canada’s climate not being suitable for teas, but the love for his country and tea continued.
“Sri Lanka produces the finest, the best, highest quality (of tea) in the world, so I am very proud of being Sri Lankan,” says Walgama.
He decided to host an information session where community members could learn how tea is produced, as he believed people would find It interesting to learn how tea is prepared before it goes into your cup.
“I know most people know only how to pre-prepare tea and that’s what they see, but what is happening from the field up to your cup, it’s fascinating.”
While many products say they are tea, Walgama says true teas only come from the tea plant, in four main categories: black, white, oolong and green. So scientifically, herbal teas are not “real” teas.
While they might not be scientifically recognized as tea, Walgama doesn’t discourage drinking herbals, but he’d rather educate and share information about the comforting beverage.
At the event Walgama spoke about the harvesting process, how the plant is turned into tea and participants had the opportunity to sip and spill the tea, a metaphor for gossip, during the event.
