Province putting millions into safe sport strategy

The Alberta government is investing $3 million in a strategy to ensure residents can participate in sport without being subject to harassment or abuse.
The new Safe Sport Strategy is being developed in partnership with the Alberta Sport Leadership Association to encourage quality programming in safe environments to empower Albertans to participate.
The province says it stands with organizations, advocates and survivors to prevent and address malfeasance in sports.
The new strategy will see the creation of a third-party independent complaint process to support sporting organizations in their efforts to address and eliminate abuse and harassment.
The province says with the strategy, sports participants will get “timely, fair and equitable responses to maltreatment complaints.”
Engagement is to start in coming weeks with a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week confidential reporting system expected to launch by fall.
Immediate support will be provided and criminal matters directed to police when complaints are received with independent case managers assessing those complaints based on sport policies to determine the next days. Sports groups will get education, training and resources to help them encourage safe environments for participants.
“Sport should inspire confidence, not fear,” said Joseph Schow, Minister of Tourism and Sport and MLA for Cardston Siksika. “I won’t rest until Albertans know they are safe, seen and valued in every gym, rink and field in the province. Our Safe Sport Strategy is more than a policy – it’s a system rooted in respect, and a promise to every athlete.”
