The two greatest words known to playoff hockey are Game Seven and Hurricane fans took that to heart on Wednesday evening as the Hurricanes faced the Hitmen in Calgary.

The Movie Mill hosted the game on the big screen and fans lined up before the doors opened to show their support.

It wasn’t just the boys they waere supporting, as admission was by a food donation in support of the Lethbridge Food Bank. According to the Movie Mill Instagram, 280 pounds of food was donated and the two theatres showing the game were packed as about 250 fans showed up.

As soon as the puck dropped, a “Let’s go Hurricanes, let’s go” chant broke out, led by two young fans behind me.

Just over three minutes in the game the Canes scored and the theatre erupted in cheers. However, when Calgary answered with a goal with 12:48 mark, the theatre continued to cheer for their home team. “Go Canes Go” chants were started sporadically throughout the game. Before the end of the first, Lethbridge found itself up again and the theatre erupted in cheers.

During the breaks, fans took the time to stretch their legs, use the washroom and load up on snacks.

While there was no scoring in the second, fans cheered as the Hurricanes killed off penalties and showed their disappointment when Miguel Marques had a partial breakaway but wasn’t able to capitalize on it.

Justin Forbes also gave a shout out to the fans at the Movie Mill, which the theatre responded to with an eruption of cheers.

The third period was another thrilling one as the Hurricanes were given a double minor penalty and Jackson Unger stood on his head making a total of 19 saves in the third. Each time the Hurricanes dumped the puck out of their zone, or Unger drew a whistle, the theatre erupted.

While it wasn’t your typical theatre experience, I have to give credit to the crowd as everyone was incredibly respectful. There was no throwing of popcorn or pop, it was genuinely a wholesome experience of fans supporting their hometown team.

As the Hurricanes advance to the Eastern Conference Final, the Movie Mill has announced they will be showing the first two games tonight and Saturday, which will be played in Medicine Hat. Admission is once again a donation to the Food Bank and I encourage all Canes fans, especially those with young fans, to take advantage of this opportunity.
