Annual Kidney Walk kicks off Saturday at Henderson Lake

This year’s Kidney Walk is stepping up to help meet increased need within southern Alberta.
“With increased requests for our short-term financial assistance in southern Alberta, our kidney patients need your support more than ever,” says Mike Brodie, manager community programs, southern Alberta branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. “Every dollar raised at Kidney Walk brings us one step closer to a brighter future for those affected by kidney disease.”
The annual event, which has continued for more than a decade, raises funds and awareness for the kidney and transplant communities, and provides a platform for those impacted by kidney disease and their loved ones.
On May 31, participating residents will meet at Lethbridge’s Henderson Lake Park (2710 Parkside Drive South) at 9 a.m. to register, with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. (start location at the horseshoe pits).“One in 10 Canadians is living with kidney disease, and the number of people diagnosed annually continues to rise, particularly with high incidence rates of diabetes and high blood pressure.
Because there are often no symptoms until kidney disease is quite advanced, many people aren’t aware that they have the disease until they’ve already lost most of their kidney function,” a statement from the Kidney Foundation of Canada’s southern Alberta branch reads.
That is what makes events like this so important, the foundation says, as it not only supports those already impacted, but raises awareness of the risks for others so they might be able to get answers earlier.
“Help spread awareness to others in our community and join the walk and celebration,” says Brodie. “Registration is free, and the event is perfect for the whole family, with games, food and door prizes.”
