The provincial government on Monday announced it is investing $22 million over three years to modernize and expand the renal dialysis unit at Chinook Regional Hospital.

The province says the funding will improve programs for southern Alberta who who chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease and depend on dialysis for survival.

Construction is expected to be finished next summer and will support 124 jobs in construction and the trades.

“Our ongoing work at Chinook Regional Hospital will improve renal care programs, boost access to dialysis treatment and increase capacity while expanding hours of service. Earlier this year, we finished our Alberta Surgical Initiative project at the same hospital, which expands surgical capacity for Lethbridge and area residents while demonstrating our government’s commitment to expanding health care services for southern Albertans,” said Alberta Minister of Infrastructure Martin Long in a statement.

When it’s finished the renal dialysis expansion will introduce a new unit to address over-capacity issues that are being experienced.

The upgrade will include 28 hemodialysis stations and two airborne isolation rooms.

Also included in the project are four new examination rooms and additional spaces for family consultation, training and support services.

“Every Albertan deserves timely care close to home. This investment will expand renal dialysis services in southern Alberta by increasing capacity, improving efficiency and enhancing the patient experience for those needing life-saving treatment,” said Matt Jones, Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services.
