Province to regulate health care aides

Alberta’ s 40,000 health care aides will become regulated under a professional college starting on Feb. 2 of next year.
The provincial government made the announcement on Wednesday with Minister of Primary and Preventative Heatlh Services Adriana LaGrange calling the regulation “a major step forward in strengthening Alberta’s health care system.”
The minister added that “it gives Albertans confidence that the care they receive is safe and that health care aides have the proper training and oversight.”
The province says health care aides play a vital role in the health system, providing hands-on supports to residents who need high levels of care including seniors and people with chronic or acute illnesses.
Alberta will be the first province to regulate aides under a professional college.
“The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta will become the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta and will be responsible for registering health care aides, setting practice and conduct standards, ensuring continued professional development and responding to complaints. This work builds on the college’s experience regulating licensed practical nurses in Alberta,” said a statement from the government.
Starting Feb. 2, people who meet the requirements to register as a health care aide and intend to practice services to the public and use that tile must apply for registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aids of Alberta, which is presently known as the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.
Only registered health care aides will be able to use that title and all aides will be required to renew their practice permits every year.

Will Various Care institutions be mandated to hire ONLY licensed Health Care aides or is there an adjustment time period? Will Aides receive sanctioned training with this program or is it just a cash grab?
