Clean safe drinking water is something many, if not most, people take for granted. Residents turn on the taps and expect the water to flow immediately and consistently. When the taps don’t work, however, or when the water flowing is not clean and safe, everyone notices immediately.
To ensure there’s enough potable water to go around, the City of Lethbridge announced Wednesday that it is moving ahead with critical upgrades to the city’s water treatment plant; with the current phase funded partly by a $9.2 million grant from the provincial government.
“As Alberta’s population grows, we need strong infrastructure to keep up,” said Minister of Affordability and Utilities and Lethbridge East MLA Nathan Neudorf during a media conference at the plant Wednesday. “This grant will help make sure Lethbridge and the surrounding region has the water it needs to support families and businesses and economic development for years to come.”
The increased capacity is especially vital for the region’s thriving agri-food and manufacturing sectors.Â
“The investment is a major win for our community,” said Mayor Blaine Hyggen. “It protects our water, helps support future growth and meets the news of residents, business and industry. And the best part: there’s no increase to residential water rates for this phase.”
The Water Treatment Plant runs 24 hours a day and serves more than 133,000 southern Albertans across 10 municipalities. These early improvements will set the stage for future growth all around.
“Water is an incredibly important part of life and it’s one of the critical things that all municipalities are involved in providing,” said Coaldale Director of Growth and investment Cameron Mills.Â
“It’s something our citizens and businesses expect to be delivered perfectly…clean drinking water.
“We’ve been very fortunate and Coaldale to have really great strategic partners in the City of Lethbridge, their administration as well as their elected officials.”
The first phase includes two major projects. First, a new high-capacity water clarifier will back up older equipment. Second, electrical upgrades will swap-out aging equipment and add extra power sources.
