The City of Lethbridge is making changes to the traffic flow in the Fleetwood neighbourhood of South Lethbridge to improve the safety of students, families, and residents who use the area.

Beginning on Wednesday, 11 Street South and 12 Street South between 9 Avenue South and 10 Avenue South will be converted into one-way streets, with 11 Street South going southbound and 12 Street South going northbound.

Ahmed Ali, Transportation Engineering Manager, said Monday that these changes are part of a bigger initiative called “Vision Zero.”

“We want to achieve zero injuries and fatalities in the City of Lethbridge by 2040, and these injuries and fatalities happen because of vehicle collisions.”

He said that in their transportation safety plan, which includes the vision zero, they look at areas where a large number of school-aged children are around.

“In the last number of years, we’ve done a lot of improvements near schools, like the flashing lights at pedestrian crossings, and we are also creating school travel plans as part of the major project, which is funded by the provincial government.”

During interactions with Fleetwood-Bawden Elementary School about school traveling plans, they found that the traffic circulation around the school was not ideal, and people were complaining about congestion.

“These two streets, 12 street and 11 Street south between 9 Avenue and 10 Avenue South, are narrower than the standard street width,” said Ali. “They vary from seven to eight metres.”

That becomes a problem with parking on both sides of the street and two-way traffic, as there is not enough room.

“We did a comprehensive public engagement with all the area residents and with the school and came up with this plan,” said Ali.

The area already has a number of one-way streets, and now they are adding two more to the count.

Signage is in place along the affected streets and will remain approximately two weeks after the changes are made.
