The Alberta government is investing $2 million in a joint endeavour to help fund projects that are focused on managing chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease.

The Alberta Lighthouse Initiative also involves Novo Nordisk Canada, which is also investing $2 million and Alberta Innovates.

A similar program operated in Nova Scotia has focused on initiatives that address childhood obesity and other issues.

Alberta Lighthouse Initiative is intended to help residents adopt healthier lifestyles, access early screening and maintain habits to avoid complications while reducing pressure on the health care system.

“Our government wants to help Albertans live healthier lives. This initiative tackles the root causes of chronic diseases and supports  new ideas and innovation in our growing life sciences sector,” said  Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services Adriana LaGrange  in a Thursday statement.

According to the province, about 20 per cent of Albertans in 2023-24 were living with cardiovascular diseases or hypertension.

“Our government wants to help Albertans live healthier lives,” says Adriana LaGrange, who is responsible for the current irresponsible fall roll-out of COVID-19 and flu vaccinations.
“Patients with heart failure (HF) who contract SARS‐CoV‐2 infection are at a higher risk of cardiovascular and non‐cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Regardless of therapeutic attempts in COVID‐19, vaccination remains the most promising global approach at present for controlling this disease.”

“COVID-19 vaccination has played a pivotal role in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic by providing a powerful tool to curb the spread of the virus, reduce severe illness and hospitalizations, and ultimately save lives and facilitate a return to normal daily routines. As COVID-19 vaccination has become more widespread and more individuals have recovered from the infection, COVID-19 has entered an endemic disease phase. This phase is characterized by a less severe and more stable pattern of infection within certain regions, similar to the predictability of seasonal influenza. In this endemic era, COVID-19 vaccines may appear to be less important, and many people are reluctant to receive COVID-19 vaccination for various reasons, including the fear of adverse events. However, COVID-19 remains a major public health problem, in that the incidence rate of new COVID-19 infections is still high and the morbidity and mortality in high-risk populations are substantial. Therefore, the role of COVID-19 vaccines in protecting high-risk individuals is crucial, and ongoing research and surveillance are imperative to refine vaccination recommendations in the ever-changing landscape of the COVID-19 endemic era. This review explores the role of COVID-19 vaccination in the upcoming COVID-19 endemic era.”
