Spoiler alert: Christmas stuff is filling stores already. Yes, it’s that time of year – and maybe has been for a few weeks – that even before Thanksgiving and Halloween have come and gone, we consumers are being reminded it’s soon time to stock up on gift bags, paper, tape and gifts for family and friends.
Not to mention it’s soon time to untangle strings of lights tossed into Rubbermaid containers after being removed from houses, fences and trees after the last Christmas season ended – in my case a couple of weeks after the fact.
In case you didn’t notice, Halloween this year is on a Friday night which potentially means a lot more kittens, dragons, ghosts and goblins knocking on doors and if the weather is co-operative we could have a hordes of youngsters and their parents walking the streets in the annual candy-fest.
Bring it on! In the last couple of years, I’ve really embraced Halloween because of the memories of wearing those brittle plastic masks which were nearly impossible to see or breathe through as I headed out with my pals.
Halloween can be wickedly fun and I have my own masks ready to don for the occasion. Last year, I wore a skull mask and my Chicago Bears winter parka that seldom comes out of the closet. Nobody else got the joke but I pretended I was a fan from our last Super Bowl win in 1985. If I had a Leafs jersey, that joke could be repurposed this year.
What I come up in a couple of weeks remains to be seen but I intend to have a little fun on this night, as well. And I really hope the weather co-operates as much as we desperately need moisture because to have Halloween fall on a Friday night when kids don’t have to be in school the next day is a recipe for fun times.
Lethbridge Musical Theatre on Oct.31 will be staging a special production of its latest offering a bit later in the evening at 8 p.m. to give theatre-goers a chance to take the kids out before hitting the Yates for some entertainment of their own. Maybe with the kids since “Once Upon a Mattress” is a family-friendly show based upon the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale.”The Princess and the Pea.”
Our household is already stocking up on the treats in case our neighbourhood gets a good turnout this year. Being close to a pair of schools, the number of kids can really vary with some years nearly 200 hitting our streets.
And trick-or-treaters can be assured they won’t be getting candy corn, Tootsie Rolls, rockets or those sticky molasses-tasting candies which to me are synonymous with Halloween and in a good way. But I’m a fan of pickled eggs and mustard-slathered head cheese so consider the source here. Instead, kids will actually get real treats.
And as I wander through aisles filled with Christmas trees, ornaments and chocolates in the next couple of weeks, I’ll make sure I pick up a few more boxes of kit kats and other good stuff to be on the safe side.
