The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns are hoping for big things in their third annual Giving Day.

Giving Day allows friends, family, alumni and community members to support the Pronghorn varsity program of their choosing.

Teagan Viney, president of the Pronghorn student-athlete council, says the funds are important because of the extra support  it provides to student-athletes.

“Giving Day is used for our enhancement fund for Pronghorn Athletics, so it’s just money on top of what our normal budget is…it is so hard to be a student athlete, so it adds a little bit of extra funding to help us with all those extra things that are sometimes hard to get on our own.”

Funds can be directed to the Enhancement Fund of the Pronghorn varsity program chosen by the donor which is selected at the time of the donation. Each team has specific fundraising goals set for specific purposes on the Pronghorns website.

One example listed on the site is the Women’s Rugby program seeking to raise $20,000 to use for postseason travel. Viney, who plays for the Pronghorn women’s rugby team, says the funds raised have opened doors for the program.

“Even the small donations mean a big thing. Three years ago, it actually sent our Rugby Sevens team to nationals in Montreal, which was really big for us and one of the first times we were able to do that. Any bit of money has supported us in so many different ways. Each impact is different for each sport, but everyone feels it.”

Giving Day 2025 is scheduled for Nov. 4. More information is available on the Pronghorn website at gohorns.ca
