The provincial government wants to put a new look on licence plates.
The government on Wednesday announced that until Nov. 15 Albertans can have a voice in a refreshed look for the plates which haven’t been changed since 1984.
Starting in 2026, licence plates will be based on a theme of “Strong and Free,” which the government says echoes the province’s Latin motto and reflects “Alberta’s bold identity, economic strength and deep-rooted provincial pride. The motto’s inclusion on the licence plates will also serve as a nod to Canada’s national anthem and Alberta’s position as a strong and sovereign province within a united Canada.”
In online voting, residents can choose among eight unique designs incorporating the province’s landscape and history.
Four designs will advance to the second round of voting with the top two earning entry into the final round to determine the winning concept.
Cost of the new plate will be $28 for Albertans who choose to replace their current one or motorists can obtain a new one on their vehicle registration date without paying an additional cost. Current plates can still be used after the new one is launched if they are in good condition.
“Alberta is strong and free, and Albertans will have the opportunity to choose a new licence plate that captures that spirit,” said Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally in a statement.

I didn’t chose any of the ucp plate options but commented that “no change” must also be an option. It’s like their one sided town halls.
This is more of a nod to sepratistes than anything else.
One would think that Smith has one or two more important issues to be concerned about but obviously she needs to signal to the separatists that she has their back.
