The Alberta government is introducing winter rules for utilities that will prevent people from being left out in the cold and dark.
Until April 15, the winter rules are in effect which means residential electrical services can’t be disconnected by retailers. And starting Nov. 15, natural gas services won’t be allowed to be fully disconnected, either.
The province says the rules protect the vulnerable from having their services cut off, ensuring people have access to energy when it’s needed the most.
“No one should be forced to choose between keeping their homes warm or putting food on the table. During our harsh winters, utilities are not an option – they’re vital to the survival of Albertans and we’re taking action to make sure their heat and power stay on,” said Minister of Affordability and Utilities Nathan Neudorf on Wednesday.
Neudorf is also the MLA representing Lethbridge East.
Utility disconnection is prohibited year-round if a forecast predicts subzero temperatures within 24 hours of such a planned action.
People with disconnected utilities starting Nov. 1 will be contacted by the Utilities Consumer Advocate to help them get utilities going before winter.
