Lethbridge Police Service is inviting the community to join them on Halloween for a fun afternoon of trick-or-treating during their third annual Trunk or Treat, this year with a third location.

Cst. Joel Running said the event gives families an opportunity to bring the kids and get candy from the back of a police vehicle in a fun and safe environment.

“As an extra treat this year, we’ve added a third location to our festivities making it easier for families across the city to join in the good times,” said Running. “The new location is at the Henderson Lake/Nikka Yuko parking lot, just off Mayor Magrath Drive South.”

He added they will continue to have Trunk or Treat at the other two locations: the boat launch parking lot at Nicholas Sheran Park, just off McMaster Boulevard West, and the green space behind the Logan Boulet Arena on 9 Avenue North.

While this free, family-friendly event is intended for younger children, all youth are welcome to attend.

“Trunk or Treat is quickly becoming one of our favourite traditions here at the Lethbridge Police Service,” said Running. “We love meeting the kids and families, especially when they are excited to show us their costumes and collect candy from us.”

Many staff members, both uniformed and civilian, volunteered their time to help out with Trunk or Treat this year, which made it possible to add a third location.

“At the heart of this event is our commitment to build meaningful relationships within the community,” said Running. “We believe that fostering a connection between law enforcement and the families we serve, it’s essential for creating a safe and supporting environment for our children.”

He said this event is about more than collecting treats, it is about celebrating the vibrant community and the spirit that makes the city special, enjoying laughter and comradery and participating in a fun tradition.

“We invite everyone to join us for an evening filled with joy, laughter, and community unity. The smiles on the children’s faces when they collect treats from our officers, make every effort worthwhile,.”

Many kids show up in police officer costumes and they often say they want to be an officer when they grow up, which Running said always makes everyone smile.

“That’s a positive thing to see for us, especially since some of the different situations that we deal with families, it’s good to see that they still back us and there isn’t too much negativity coming from the children,” said Running.

LPS would like to remind everyone to pay attention, as children will be walking around on Halloween night. To be vigilant as a driver, and to pay attention and use crosswalks or corners to cross the street as pedestrians.

Trunk or Treat will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at the three previously mentioned locations.

Events like this remind me how small acts of community connection really matter.
