All retaill businesses deal with theft at some point or another, especially those in the downtown core, which not only has a negative impact on business owners, but also the experience for their customers.
The Downtown Policing Unit will be hosting its second annual Cooperative Policing Seminar next week to help educate business owners, loss prevention officers and other community partners.
Cst. Dayton Pagliericci, of the Downtown Policing Unit, says this seminar is meant to provide information to those in retail and simplify legal jargon to ensure everyone is on the same page when it comes to knowing what their rights are when encountering a situation involving theft.
“We created this little presentation to answer those question and get some information for officers that are in the job, officers that have been thinking about the job employers that are thinking about hiring security, all these kinds of things to help make everybody work together on this.”
Sgt. Tanner Campbell adds that this seminar not only empowers community members in understanding what to during a theft incident, but also helps build rapport between business owners and law enforcement.
“It helps build relationships between (business owners), those community partners and ourselves as the police so when we are responding to incidents we don’t have to work on building rapport, these people already understand that and it creates more of a streamlined process.”
The seminar is free to attend and will take place on Jan. 8, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Participants will be responsible for their own lunch.
Those interested can register by emailing inquiries@lethbridgepolice.ca by Monday.
