Students and alumni of Lethbridge Polytechnic had the opportunity to speak with over 100 different organizations with job opportunities at their third annual career fair held yesterday.

Adrianna Smith, student development coordinator at Lethbridge Polytechnic says the career fair is more than just helping students find meaningful work.

“It allows them to broaden their horizon, make connections and put their skills into action, which doesn’t happen all the time.”

Unlike pre-pandemic career fairs hosted by the institution, which would host specific fairs for each academic program, the fair has hosted a multitude of different organizations spanning all kinds of fields related to programs at the Polytechnic.

Smith says this not only allows students to expand their horizon when it comes to finding a career, it also encourages them to think outside of the box.

“It forces our students to think a bit more creatively outside the box and also really recognize the skills they have and how they can be applied in a variety of different ways.”

She adds that by getting practice with exploring jobs based on their skillset as a whole and not just on the degree they have, it prepares students be proactive when searching for a job.

“It’s important that young workers, any worker at that, is agile and dynamic,” says Smith. “It’s good to have a plan, but you can also be prepared for that next step, be prepared for change.”

It was a busy day as many students took the opportunity to speak with potential future employers and the Lethbridge Polytechnic looks forward to next year’s career fair.
